The department of medical oncology is responsible for diagnosing and treating all cases of hematological malignancies as well as giving chemotherapy to majority of the solid tumors in various settings. Medical Oncology Dept. is committed to improving the diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with cancer. To meet this mission there is a broad range of basic research, clinical research, patient care, and teaching.

The efforts of this department has resulted in improved survival rates and reduced morbidity. The department practices high dose chemotherapy, day care chemotherapy etc. The nursing staff as well as the junior doctors are well versed in caring for patients with long term venous access devices and implantable ports.

The department runs outpatient clinic services every day, about 20-30 patients visit the OPD per day. At a time around 40 inpatients are admitted for chemotherapy, management of complications and for work up.

For every new patient, after diagnosis is established, there is departmental meeting for planning of treatment. Department has its own medical minor OT where all minor procedures such as Bone marrow aspiration/biopsy, ascetic and pleural tapping, trucut biopsies etc are carried out under full aseptic precautions.

The department of radiation oncology was established at Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Attavar, Mangalore and started functioning with a Tele-Cobalt (Phoenix) unit on 24th December 1992. It is the second facility available in Dakshina Kannada District in Karnataka State, India, for the treatment of cancer patients, under the Manipal University, the first one to be established being the department at Shirdi Sai Babha Cancer center at Manipal.

Apart from treating the cancer patients by radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the department promotes academic activities through teaching and training. The department is actively engaged in advanced research in radiation therapy & oncology, development of indigenous equipment, patient fixation devices and beam modifiers. The department provides teaching for MBBS students, interns, postgraduates, and technical students from radio-diagnosis
